Hilltoppers rout St. Joe's for sixth straight win By Pat Paul staff writer Herald News
Joliet Catholic Academy's football team has had next week's game against Carmel circled on its schedule since Day One.
The yearly battle for East Suburban Catholic Conference supremacy is a slugfest between state-ranked teams with both schools producing their best efforts.
That matchup doesn't take place until next week, so JCA had to take care of business Friday night against ESCC doormat St. Joseph. Despite fumbling five times and losing four, the Hillmen rolled to an easy 55-0 win, setting the stage for the classic next week in Mundelein.
JCA (6-2, 6-0) scored five times in the first half, opening a 34-0 lead before putting the running clock in motion with its first possession of the second half.
For the record, Brandon Geiss scored on a 25-yard run, Connor Krisch on a 27-yard pass from John Ruettiger and Tyler Hudetz added a 10-yard scamper, all in the first quarter. In the second, Coby Fleener grabbed a 36-yard toss from Ruettiger, and Ruettiger capped the first half scoring with an 11-yard TD run.
The most welcome score came with 9:04 left in the third quarter when Nick Clancy rolled to a 37-yard TD run. Ryan Piechocinski added a 14-yard TD run and Nick Szopinski capped the night with a 10-yard scoring jaunt.
The Hillmen offense finished with 385 yards rushing on 31 carries, and Ruettiger added 107 passing for 492 yards. Eleven different backs rushed the ball as coach Dan Sharp went with reserves from the end of the second quarter-on.
"It got a little sloppy, but it usually is in games like this," Sharp said. "We got to play everybody and we held some guys out who had some little things bothering them. All in all it was a positive thing. I just hope we got all of our fumbles out of our system before next week."
