It's over early, Catholic scores 72

Aside from a less than memorable first series, Catholic scored early and often against the Olympians tonight.

Opening play Dan Hrvatin was 5 yards behind the defense but the ball was under thrown, and fell incomplete. After a running play that went nowhere, a holding call set up a 4th and 10 forcing a punt.

For the first time this season, the snap sailed over Joe Benson's head and the Olympians jumped on it for 6. They tacked on 2 more and led 8-0.

Then the roof collapsed on the Olympians after the Hillmen awoke from their first series mulligan,

Catholic raced out to a 52 - 8 half time score, resulting in a running clock the entire second half.

Joe Benson had a spectacular 92 yard run for a TD outrunning the Rich Central defenders down the sidelines.

Joe also had a reception for 50 yards or so for a TD from McKeon.

Dan Hrvatin had multiple long runs for TD's, and in general ran very well all night.

Billy McKeon started at QB, and had several long runs. John Ruettiger replaced Billy at QB and guided the team to 3 more scores.

3rd string QB Jeff Peterson ran in a TD from 30 yards out, and Freshman Tyler Hudetz up from the sophomore team darted in from 40 yards out displaying unbelievable speed.

All this with the Hillmen offense missing two starters up front - 6-5, 270-pound senior tackle Brett Stengele (neck spasms) and 6-1, 230-pound sophomore guard Joe Minor (surgery for appendicitis).

"We expected Brett to be released to play tonight, but he wasn't so we're hoping for good news on Monday," said Coach Sharp after the game.

Joe Minor is recovering nicely from his appendicitis, "once he's released to play he'll be back full strength," added Coach Sharp.

So next week Catholic gets Batavia at Joliet Memorial stadium after the Bulldogs knocked off Providence 15-13.

Providence (5-5) didn't secure a playoff spot until the final week of the season defeating DeLaSalle in a close one. But their luck ran out against Batavia.

Providence escapes a match-up with JCA. I'm sure the IHSA is disappointed.
