| Catholic runs over Viator 42-28 |

Mike Menozzi
Typically when you score 42 points and win - it's hard to be critical of your performance. Unless your Joliet Catholic - state champions five of the last six years.
"We need to clean up our coverage's, but you have to hand it to Viator, and Jared Funk. He's the best I've seen, and I mean it" Coach Sharp said in admiration.
"If Funk played for us he'd probably be one of our running backs. Years ago we played against Brasic (Riverside Brookfield) and I thought he was the best I'd seen. Funk is better. He's as good a passer and a better runner. Vanderbilt (where Funk has been offered a scholarship) is getting a terrific player."
Viator unexplainably came out in a variety of formations such as the polecat, which we unsuccessful. Had they started the game with they're typical formations, who know what might have happened.
As it was - Viator was never able to control Catholic's offense, as they converted 4 of 4 4th down conversions, and answered every challenge by Viator and the superhuman Funk.
EdgyTim walked by me and said - "if you (JCA) run into a passing team in the 6A playoffs you're in trouble".
Maybe, but let's not forget that JCA can score some points ourselves, so if someone has their sites set on knocking off the Hilltoppers, they'll need to score more that the 49 points the Hillmen are averaging per game - not an easy task.
Still the "Hillmen have a lot to clean up on both sides of the ball" as Coach Sharp pointed out.
We didn't control the line of scrimmage as well as we usually do.
But we did score 42 points.
"We didn't hardly have the ball in the second half", said Coach Sharp. "They controlled the ball with their passing game and the clock".
Lets also give credit to the wide outs for Viator - they played a terrific game and displayed great hands on nearly every one of Funks passes.
Still - 42- 28 was the final, Catholic in control the entire game although Viator did make it interesting with their explosive passing game.
So, that's it right?
Not quite - Viator will be in the 6A playoffs, the IHSA isn't going to let JCA and Viator play in the title game, so we'll at least meet in the semi-finals.
Catholic plays St. Pats next week - which will be far from an easy game. If they win, they have the ESCC title and an undefeated seed in round one of the playoffs.
"They're acting like they won the super bowl, we're upset, and we won."
That's part of Joliet Catholic football. Never being satisfied. Identify the weaknesses, and improve upon them.
Call it a double win tonight. Knocking off Viator, and identifying what you need to make adjustments on.
With 42 points.
Part of what makes this program what it is - the never ending desire to be the best - the best in the conference, the best in the class, the best in the state, . . . the best nationally?
You never know, . . .
nothing is impossible with hard work and dedication.
