No Surprises here, JCA rolls.

On a cold windy day, an undermanned St. Joe’s with 26 players on the varsity roster, wasn’t going to pull off any upsets on their home field against the Hilltoppers. The Chargers played hard, and gave it everything they had, but it wasn’t enough.

The Hillmen substituted freely, using 4 different quarterbacks in the first half. I don’t have the exact yardage, but I’m pretty sure the leading ground gainer for the Hillmen was junior Doug Roolf who broke off a 49 yard run only to be pulled down at the 1 yard line and score his first TD of the year a few plays later.

Benson, Clancy, and McKeon all had great individual plays but didn’t play long enough to rack up much yardage.

I talked to Coach Sharp after the game:
“I want to compliment St. Joe’s on what they do with what they have, they play hard, give them credit for giving it everything they had.”

“Some of our young kids got a chance to play, Hrvatin looked good, the defense looked good. We have Carmel next week, and have a chance to finish the season 9-0. After last year, we have a bad taste because of that loss.”

The starting group looked good while they were out there: “The starting kids looked good, the backs ran well. We had a chance to work in some different fullbacks, Clancy got some work at FB as so did Jeske, that’ll help us down the road”

“The schedule makers were kind to us, it allowed us to rest some kids on a cold windy day, and gave us a chance to evaluate some of the young kids and point towards next week.”

“St. Joe’s is trying to build a program here, and they’re facing a lot of problems with attendance, but you have to hand it to these kids that stick it out and give it everything they have. This is a great basketball and soccer school, and they’re trying to make the football program as good.”

This is a great day for the kids to play that don’t normally get the chance, did any of those guys stand out today? “Doug Roolf, played great today, Dougie works so hard in practice, he’s small in stature but got a big heart. Dan Hrvatin, is going to be a great player for us, he’s so good now and gives us such an added dimension off the bench. I think Zurlene will be a contributor as well next year. Our QB’s played very well, Dane Thayer played well – all these guys need to be ready to step in if someone gets hurt.

“Our defense played very well, they put great pressure on them, they had two blocked kicks, and just played very very well.”

“This will help us in our evaluation, when we meet with the kids individually to discuss their play and what they need to do to be better the off-season to improve and what their opportunities are for next year. The last two weeks were tough to get kids into the game, this is good for morale, good for the kids.”

After Carmel’s loss this week to St. Viator the Corsairs will be smarting for that one. As Coach Sharp says they only “wounded the bear”. So now they’re just good and upset coming into our game.

Stay tuned this week for more Hilltopper – Carmel pregame information.
