| JCA primed to defend title at Rudy's meet |
 |
Providence Catholic, Bolingbrook and Andrew will attempt to dethrone Joliet Catholic as king of the hill.
A noble plan, but a difficult venture.
The 28th annual Rudy's Gym High School Football Powerlifting Championship is scheduled Saturday at JCA. And the Hilltoppers intend to extend their string of 11 straight championships in the event that serves as the unofficial kickoff to a new football season.
"I'm not sure, but Andrew may be the toughest opponent," said Francis "Rudy" Ruettiger, originator and operator of the meet and the JCA strength coach. "I know John (Ivlow, the Bolingbrook football coach) has some top people out for various reasons.
"Providence is always an unknown. But I do know they have some huge linemen there."
Eight contestants from each schools will participate in the bench press, squat and dead lift. Total pounds will determine individual and team champions.
The meet will begin at 9 a.m. and continue through mid-afternoon, probably about 3 p.m. It is open to the public free of charge.
Ruettiger said he will be doing "some mixing and matching" with his JCA lineup Saturday for the various events.
"We're not one of our teams of the past, that's for sure, but we will be very competitive," he said. "We have a good group of kids."
One lifter who Ruettiger said will be worth keeping an eye on is Hilltoppers junior Malin Jones, who will be one of this area's high-profile players on the football field this fall.
